20th Anniversary Celebration Caption Contest

Congratulations to the Winners!

In March 1981, I quit my last job to become a freelance writer. Twenty years later, I'm still at it, so I hosted a contest to help me celebrate that milestone as well as the completion of the 4th edition of the JavaScript Bible.

The photo to the left shows me resting my weary head atop a set of page proofs for JSBible4. Contestants were to create a clever caption for the photo. From the 217 captions submitted by 81 entrants on five continents, the judges chose the following winners:

Grand Prize

  • 3M Announces the Selection of Danny Goodman as Customer of the Year for 2000.    (Carol Gunby)

Runners Up (in random order)

  • The author testing his new project: "JavaScript: Learn through Osmosis".    (Chet Swanson)

  •
  • So many trees, so little time.    (Paul Dorroh)

  •
  • Alan Kay wrote Smalltalk on one piece of paper. I think I'm in the wrong business....    (Steve Champeon)

  •
  • Flushed by the success of his last book, written entirely on Post-It notes, Danny Goodman contemplates the first installment of his Post-It flag trilogy.    (Ron Chaussee)

Thanks to all contestants for your great contributions!

CONTEST RULES

Prizes: One (1) GRAND PRIZE of an autographed copy of the hardcover JavaScript Bible Gold Edition. Four (4) RUNNER UP PRIZES of autographed copies of the softcover JavaScript Bible 4th edition.

Entries: Submit entries via the form at the bottom of this page. You may enter as many times as you like, and you may include multiple captions per entry. Your entry must include one or more captions, your name (or nickname if you wish to remain anonymous), and an e-mail address where you can be reached at the end of March 2001. Entries must be submitted by midnight U.S. Pacific Time on Sunday, 25 March 2001. Entries arriving after that deadline will not be considered. I am not responsible for entries that do not arrive due to computer or network glitches. All entries become my property (heh heh), but any publication of your entry will include your attribution.

Judging: Some (anonymous) friends of mine and I will select one Grand Prize winner and four Runner Up winners while we enjoy dinner and a bottle of wine. Decisions of the judges are final.

Winners: Winners will be announced at www.dannyg.com on or before 2 April 2001. Winners' names (but not e-mail addresses) will be posted along with their captions. Winners will be contacted via e-mail for mailing addresses to receive their prizes. Delivery dates of prizes are subject to prize availability (estimated June for Grand Prize; estimated April for Runner Up prizes).

Eligibility: This contest is open to anyone on Earth (or orbiting in the International Space Station) who can submit the form below, with the following exceptions. Members of my family or the judges' families, and employees of Hungry Minds, Inc. are not eligible. You must abide by any local, state, and national laws that apply to your entry into contests or competitions. I pay for the prizes' postage (Priority Mail to U.S. winners; Air mail to non-U.S. winners), but winners are responsible for taxes, duties, or customs fees that may be imposed on the prize after it enters the U.S. postal system.

Caption Guidelines: Caption text must be in English, but foreign phrases in Latin characters may be used within captions. Content should be suitable for all ages. I encourage the use of intelligent puns, nerdy-scripty subjects, and even Dennis Miller-like references, if that's your thing. Just make sure that the caption is relevant to whatever you see in the photo and your experience as a reader of my published works.

Privacy: Most contests of this nature are facades for e-mail address harvesting. I don't enter online contests for that reason. Therefore, to create a contest that even I would enter, I promise you that your e-mail address will not be preserved beyond the time necessary to contact the winners. You will not receive promotional or any other unsolicited e-mail messages as a result of your entry into the contest. Your e-mail address is your property, not mine.
